BioActive Snake Racks?

Writer's picture: Roger WaltersRoger Walters

Hey!

Today I am experimenting with adding springtails, isopods and beneficial mites to my snake racks. Due to improper building practices and the overall age of the home I am residing in, I have reoccurring mold and snake mite issues. I am constantly disinfecting my racks and treating my collection yearly around springtime. My home is not well insulated with a rotting subfloor and dampness issues from an improperly installed brick wall encapsulation my crawlspace.

In order to combat this issue, I am going to set up a culture of beneficial insects on top of my rack with open ventilation. My hope is that springtails and predatory mites will make their ways through my racks and deal with any mold or parasitic mite problems that might arise.

I'll update y'all with the process and document it so that y'all might have an organic way to deal with these problems.

It's unfortunate when we are not given a good hand but there are always ways to play your cards. Most of us do not start out in state of the art facilities with sterile environments. And some of us start out with very poor circumstances. Let's make the best of the situations and move forward. I praise God each day that I am allowed to fix my behaviors and circumstances.

With Grace,
