Care Instructions
Temperament
Fancy Rats are extremely active, smart and friendly. Rats need daily enrichment and bonding opportunities with their owners. Rats are very social and do well in same sexed pairs and groups. They are generally laid back and sleepy during daytime hours and rambunctious during the night time hours. Once bonded, your pet rat can be trained to perform tricks.
Cage and Environment
Rats do best between temperatures of 60 Degrees Fahrenheit and 80 Degrees Fahrenheit. They need boxes, hides and various toys to keep them stimulated and entertained. Rats absolutely love insulated hammocks. We recommend a cage size of at least 2' wide by 3' long by 3' tall for a pair or trio of rats. We recommend upgradable cages by Critter Nation.
Diet and Health
Rat diet is very important to the health of your rodent and the determining factor in the longevity of your pet. Rat diet should consist of 80% pelletized food and 20% fresh fruits and vegetables. Rats should not eat diary products or foods that are acidic. We feed our rats Mazuri 6F pellets complimented with greens such as kale or collards and occasional treats such as bananas, apples, blueberries, strawberries and more.
